Land of the Free

The United States that is, where the incarceration rate is higher than any other nation on Earth. According to a report by the Pew Centre for the States, 1 in 100 U.S. adults is behind bars. To break down the ratio by race is even more jolting:

• 1 in 36 Hispanic adults
  
• 1 in 15 black adults
  
• 1 in 9 black males aged 20 to 34, vs. 1 in 30 for white males in the same bracket
  
• 1 in 100 black women, vs. 1 in 355 white women
